When it comes to anti-aging treatments, many patients seek procedures to improve the appearance of the eye area. Since the eyes are one of the first facial features that a person notices, patients want to eliminate the under-eye bags and droopy eyelids that contribute to a tired appearance. One of the most popular facial cosmetic procedures is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) which removes excess skin and fat on the upper and/or lower eyelids. While patients seek this procedure to rejuvenate their eyes, many are often concerned about the visibility of scars. Double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Fernando Burstein, understands patients’ concerns and uses specific techniques to minimize scarring by concealing incisions within the eyes’ natural creases.

Blepharoplasty can address both the upper and lower eyelids. Lax skin on the upper eyelid can cause heavy, drooping eyelids that may obstruct a patient’s ability to see or contribute to an always tired appearance. During upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Burstein will make incisions where the eyelid naturally folds to remove excess skin above the eye. Lower blepharoplasty eliminates isolated fat deposits below the eyes that cause a puffy appearance. To minimize scarring, Dr. Burstein uses a technique called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which makes an incision inside the lower eyelid so there are no external scars. After the procedure, Dr. Burstein can also perform laser skin resurfacing or apply a chemical peel to further rejuvenate facial skin.

Since the skin around the eyes is significantly thinner than other areas of the face, patients are especially concerned about recovery. However, eyelid surgery does not require as much downtime as other facial procedures such as a facelift or rhinoplasty. The skin near the eyes typically heals quickly without leaving dark scars which contributes to further camouflaging incision sites. Dr. Burstein’s patients, including many of his plastic surgery spotlight patients, appreciate the natural looking results and minimal scarring his facial rejuvenation techniques yield.
